A total of 12 K-pop groups took to the stage on the first of the two-night ceremony. Day one, hosted by Leeteuk from Super Junior and Gyu Ri from Kara was a night devoted to awarding Hallyu stars who have achieved the largest CD sales. The awards were separated into nine different segments consisting of grand prize awards, main prize awards, new artist awards, Hallyu icon award, best Hallyu star award, MSN Japan award, popularity award, composer awards, and CéCi K-pop award.

The two hosts of the show were in for a surprise as they were clearly the winners of the night.

The crowd at the dome went wild as Super Junior stepped up to take home the grand prize for its fifth album “Mr. Simple” as well as the main award, most popular artist award and a special award from MSN Japan. Mr. Simple sold 479,329 copies and it was the second time the band received Grand Prize, following a win in 2009 for “Sorry Sorry.”

Meanwhile girl group Kara tasted its first victory at the award show taking home a grand prize for selling 100,000 copies of its third album “Step” as well as being crowned “Best Hallyu Star.”
“We just want to thank our fans who are always there for us like sunflowers to the sun. We dedicate tonight to our fans and we promise that we’ll keep doing our best to make music that will being smiles on faces of all who are going through tough times,” said Leeteuk.

The annual Korean music award show hosted by JTBC
began in 1986, is different from other award shows that focus on bands’ popularity rather than on their achievements.

Super Junior dominated Taiwanese music charts last year

Last year proved to be a super one for Super Junior in Taiwan as the group’s fourth and fifth albums dominated music charts there.

SM Entertainment announced on Friday that the band’s fifth album “Mr. Simple” placed first in terms of CD sales on the Taiwanese music Web site KKBOX. Meanwhile, the electronic version of the album was the second-most downloaded. The title track has been No. 1 on the singles chart for the 21st week running.

The group’s fourth album “Bonamana” achieved nearly identical results. It ranked as the most-downloaded album and the second-most purchased CD on the island.

The title track of the album also managed to stay in first place for 63 consecutive weeks.

The band’s Chinese-language subgroup Super M, consisting of eight of its 13 members, also performed well. Its second EP “Perfection” came in second place on Kuang Nan Record’s Chinese-language album chart.
